What causes a timing chain to break or wear? Over time, the timing chain stretches due to internal component wear. The chain tensioner or the guides that are connected to the timing chain may wear out as well, causing the timing chain to fail completely.

11/11/  · Then the lower timing case cover just unbolted from the block and oil pan. Replaced both timing chain guides not just the one that broke (don't want to do this again). Since the motor was apart I replaced the oil seperator, thermostat, water pump, intake boot. The motor is basicly all new and should last me another 200k.
